Charge Your Electric Vehicle from Home with Our Services in Tompkins County
Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular, and for good reason. They are environmentally friendly, can save you money on gas, and are fun to drive! However, one disadvantage of electric vehicles is their limited range. To charge an EV, you need to find a charging station, which can be difficult. The best solution is to install an EV charger at your home — John Mills Electric can help! We can help you find the right charger for your vehicle and help with the installation. With our extensive experience, we can help with any issue you may have with your charger.
How Do Electric Car Chargers Work?
Electric car chargers come in three forms: Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 (commercial fast chargers). Level 1 chargers use a standard household outlet and take a long time to fully charge the vehicle. Level 2 chargers use a special outlet and charge the vehicle much faster. Both of these type of chargers can be installed by one of our electricians at a residence or a small business.
To install a Level 1 charger, the electrician needs to run a dedicated circuit to the vehicle parking space. We can either run the circuit through the walls or ceiling into the garage, or run it outside along the driveway and into the garage. We will make sure the circuit is rated to handle the power of the charger.
With Level 2 chargers, the installation is a bit more complicated. The electrician needs to run new electrical wiring to the charging station, which will either be in the garage or in the basement. Depending on the charger, we may need to install a 240-volt circuit and a panel upgrade or upgrade the service if the current is not adequate. The charger itself is a bit heavy and can be difficult to move, so it is best to install it in a location that will remain permanent. We can help you find the best location for the charger and ensure that it is installed safely and compliant with codes.
